Adulting 101: Life Skills Classes for Tweens, Teens and Adults

Transitioning to adulthood is a challenging undertaking. Libraries are increasing helping tweens, teens and adults learn the skills of being an adult by offering adulting classes to their patrons. These classes target varying ages, and cover skills such as financial management, stress management, and interviewing.

Join us as we hear from Jane Dance of the Round Rock Public Library and Aleya Stone of the Tyler Public Library. Jane will discuss her Adulting 101 for Teens series, and Alelya will explore her recent Adulting 101 venture meant to establish a partnership with youth and adult services. Along the way we will discuss the life skills that new adults need, ways to network in order to find speakers, and best practices in presenting the content.

After the Storm: Libraries Helping to Heal Their Communities
There have been many resources and training opportunities that focus either on libraries and their role alongside emergency responders during and immediately after a disaster or on emergency preparedness for libraries prior to a disaster. This webinar, however, will explore the idea of libraries helping their communities to cope with and heal after a disaster. BARD Mobile Basics: An Overview of the NLS BARD Mobile App for iOS and Android Devices

Texas State Library Talking Book Program staff will help familiarize participants with the layout and settings of the BARD Mobile app and will demonstrate how to find, download, and listen to an NLS audio book on both iOS and Android devices. We will also briefly discuss VoiceOver and TalkBack, respectively Apple and Android's built in screen readers, and simple gestures you can use to navigate the BARD app while screen readers are enabled.

Copyright and Creative Commons resources for patrons, students, and library workers

More than ever, libraries need resources for free, including copyrighted images and other online content. In this webinar, we will be exploring resources to help you find information on copyright issues involving remote learning and other services, as well as online repositories of content you can use with patrons and students.

We will also be taking a deep dive into Creative Commons, which allows content creators to create licenses to share their creations with the world while holding on to their copyright. They also provide searching tools for students, teachers and the public to find content to use for free.

In this session, Kyla Hunt, Youth Services Consultant with the Texas State Library and Archives Commission, and Liz Philippi, TSLAC’s School Program Coordinator, will explore ways to locate Creative Commons licensed materials and to promote their use in your library. Ditching Dewey – How to Adopt Bookstore Style Organization

The Keller Public Library stopped using the Dewey Decimal System in favor of bookstore style organization in January 2017. Former Library Services Manager Rae Cheney will tell you why they got rid of Dewey, give step-by-step instructions for making the change at your library, and share the results after making the switch (spoiler alert: it’s been great!). She will also cover ways to blend bookstore style organization with Dewey if you aren’t quite ready to call it quits. This information is applicable to all library types and there will be plenty of time for questions and answers to help you figure out how to make subject classification work for your institution.
