    Basic Network Technology for Libraries

    Welcome!  To take the course, start at the top and watch each video in order, working your way down. Be sure to take the two quizzes as they appear - there's one in the middle and one at the end.  Once you're finished with the videos and quizzes, you can print or save your completion certificate for 2.5 hours of CE credit.

    In this first orientation video, meet our presenter Carson Block and get an introduction to the course.

  • Section I: Network hardware, cabling and internet service providers (ISP)

      Carson points out the glossary (see link below), and then dives into the topic of broadband:  its definition, how to choose the broadband speed for your library, and how that speed is measured.

    • 2: Speed Testing

      Watch a demonstration of a speed test and see why it can be important to perform at your library.

    • 3: Connectivity

      In this video, Carson covers the following topics:
      • A comparison of Internet speeds based on type of connection
      • Types of Ethernet cable
      • How much bandwidth a library needs
      • Scalability, and why it matters
      • Internet Service Providers (ISPs)
      • Types of Internet connections

      • 4: Network Hardware & Functions

        Learn some basic definitions of network hardware and its functions, plus why it's important to understand and care what's happening "under the hood".

            • WiFi Security - What are diiferent types?  Device/User Authentication? Encryption?
            • Open Public WiFi - why do we do it? And is it ok?

          • 7: Router Settings Demo

            Carson demonstrates logging into a router settings and making some basic changes. Check the handout below to follow along with the exercise.
