Section I: Computer Hardware
Course participants will be able to:

- Identify and explain the function of external parts of a standard desktop and laptop computer
- Identify and explain the function of the various computer ports and cables
- Identify and explain the function of the internal parts of a standard desktop and laptop
- Understand and evaluate competing computer specifications (chip types, memory, speed, storage, 32 vs. 64-bit operating systems)
- Define important hardware terms
- Demonstrate ability to perform basic computer hardware maintenance (i.e., cleaning, installing and/or replacing memory, replacing basic components)
- Locate and evaluate reliable sources for reviews prior to purchasing new hardware and software
Course participants will be able to:
- Understand the basics of BIOS security (i.e., settings and passwords)
- Describe the function of the operating system
- Understand the function of device drivers
- Install new or connect existing printers
- Demonstrate ability to update operating system, printer drivers, etc.
- Understand importance and proper use of antivirus, anti-malware, and other security software
- Evaluate effectiveness of public access computer systems, such as time and printer management (Insight) and system restoration software such as DeepFreeze, Clean Slate, Drive Vaccine, etc.
- Implement basic software and data backup systems, security and restoration procedures
